Exploring peatland restoration, wildfire resilience and community engagement on Marsden Moor
Join us for a site visit to Marsden Moor in the South Pennines on Monday, 9th November 2026.
Owned by the National Trust, Marsden Moor sits between Greater Manchester and West Yorkshire, and is a site of special scientific interest (SSSI), special area of conservation (SAC), and a Special Protection Area (SPA) with fascinating human and natural histories. The site is an upland blanket bog that has seen decades of restoration work to reverse the impacts of pollution from the industrial revolution and historic land management practices.
As a heavily visited site that has experienced a series of fires in recent years, it provides an important opportunity to explore how land managers can reduce wildfire risk while continuing to support nature, farming and public access.
The visit will explore how the National Trust, Moors for the Future and partners are bringing different approaches together — from rewetting and natural fire breaks to public engagement, early detection and rapid wildfire response.

Join us on 9th November for a site visit to the iconic Marsden Moor area of the South Pennines, owned by the National Trust.
Delegates will be split into two groups, with each group taking turns between the interactive workshop and a guided walk across Marsden Moor. After lunch and a shared discussion, the groups will swap, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to experience both the workshop and guided walk.
Lunch and return transport from Headingley Stadium included.

Guided walk across the moorland
An opportunity to look at landscape and peatland restoration work on a site that is heavily visited and has suffered from a series of fires over recent years.
Delegates will see firsthand how the National Trust and Moors for the Future are working with others; using rewetting techniques as part of a suite of approaches aimed at making the site more resilient to fire and other climate pressures whilst continuing to support biodiversity and farm businesses.

Explore the land manager’s journey in undertaking moorland restoration while taking a direct approach to reducing wildfire ignitions. This includes engaging the public about moorland fire risk, improving early detection and strengthening rapid response through the South Pennines Fire Operations Group.
Moors for the Future
Discover how peatland restoration, rewetting and natural fire breaks can help create a landscape that is more resilient to wildfire and other climate pressures.
Peak District Ranger Service
Hear from the new Wildfire Ranger about working directly with visitors to prevent campfires and BBQs, finding practical ways to reduce ignitions, and using Public Spaces Protection Orders (PSPOs) when required.

A site visit ticket includes coach travel from Headingley Stadium to the site. Alternatively, delegates can meet us at Marsden Railway Station or make your own way by car.
Transport details
Coach meet-up point
The coach pick-up point is at the Headingley Stadium and will depart promptly at 09:15a.m. and return by 5:30p.m. Please be ready a few minutes beforehand.
Meet us there
Site visit attendees can travel independently to Marsden Railway Station, where we’ll meet up with attendees travelling via coach. Whether you’re travelling via train or car, please arrive by 10:15a.m.
